Strangers in Paradise by Bonita Makuch
For many of us living in Los Angeles, a great deal of time is spent in a car traveling over the 650 miles of freeway and 22,000 miles of surface streets that make up this city. How does this affect us and our relation to each other? Not only are we traversing these highways, but we are also hurtling past thousands of others going 80 mph. The installation Strangers in Paradise gives us a glimpse at these people. The photographs capture a moment of solitude and stillness on the road. The words are an attempt to define a shared truth. The people are destined to drive off and disappear.
